To get me started, here is a beautiful shelf fungus that I found in the woods at Fort Yargo. (Fort Yargo is a state park near Athens, GA.) Shelf fungus is a fungus that is related to the mushrooms that you buy at the grocery store, although you should not eat shelf fungus!!!!

Here I go...
My first blog. Well, this is my first blog that will be "school related". New school, new school year, new blog. We will see how it goes. I am hoping that I can share all sorts of "cool science things" with anyone who is interested and wants to learn. Some people think that traffic on this "science blog" will be low, I would like to be a little bit more optimistic. We will see.

It's strange; I think I've seen that fungus type before in Virginia. Is the shelf fungus wide spread, or is it focused in certain states?
ReplyDeleteThe general rule of thumb is that a fungus likes to grow where it is warm and moist. I am not surprised to know that you have seen it elsewhere. Shelf fungus is very pretty, don't you think?
